Surf's Up!

"You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf."

I had an amazing time in Surfers Paradise. The weather (mostly), the people, the surf... All were wonderful.

I arrived at 10 in the morning and was told check-in will only be in 4 hours, but unlike in Canberra where I was threatened to be charged another night if I'd get caught sleeping in the lounge, at Backpackers in Paradise they allocated a place to store my bag and let me use the facilities, such as the kitchen and the pool.

I decided to just walkabout around town, touch base with family and friends and shop for shabbat. While wandering I came across a park dedicated in memory to John Fraser, a second lieutenant who jumped on a mine in order to save the lives of his soldiers. It reminded me very much of the story of Major Roey Klein, an officer of the Golani Brigade in the IDF.

After checking-in I went to try out the pool and there I met my roomates: Chris, Scott and Ben, three Sydneysiders up at Surfers for the weekend. We had a good talk and they were very accepting of my religion and the fact that I wouldn't be doing much on shabbat.

Shabbat itself was a wonderful experience. I went to services at the Gold Coast Hebrew Congregation, a small community servicing the area. After the prayers I was invited for both dinner and lunch at Rabbi Nir's house. I had never been at a meal with so many people and so much delicious food. (Insert obligatory and true comment that my mum's food is still the best in the world). Among the diners, there was the rabbi's family, local members of the community, Aussies on holidays and a couple on honeymoon from Brazil. It was really wonderful and with all the people, food, children and friendly family atmosphere, I felt at home.

The next day it was lightly raining in the morning and I went for my surfing lesson. On the way, one of the blokes I asked for directions from ended his instructions by telling me he's a Collingwood supporter too. The sea was quite choppy and powerful, but that just gave good waves to surf. In the 2-hour lesson they covered a lot, including things not directly related to how to surf, such as dealing with rip currents and bluebottle jellyfish. I can't wait to get on the surfboard again!

Later on in the day, after the lesson, the rain continued, so we all just chillaxed next to and in the pool. During my time in Surfers I got a lot of questions from non-Jews about my kippah. "What's the funny hat on your head?" "Did you hurt your head?" and "Do you have a bald spot you're hiding?" were some of the questions. As I've mentioned before it is quite a difference being away from Israel, where everyone has in the very least a basic understanding of Judaism. This is very much a burst bubble for me.

In the evening the rain really started chucking it down for about an hour straight before it continued raining lightly. The sky's still grey and cloudy, but I hope it'll clear up soon. (EDIT: As I'm writing and approach Brisbane the sky is clearing). I definitely would like to return to Surfers and to stay another shabbat with the Jewish community here. This was probably also my last shabbat with a Jewish community until I'm back in Melbourne, since my next weekends will be in Rainbow Beach, Airlie Beach, Mount Isa and Alice Springs and I don't think they have Jewish communities there. If you do know of anything, I'd love you to tell me about it.

Continuing Northwards... Next stop: Brisbane.

Beach Life - החיים בחוף

"How thin and insecure is that little beach of white sand we call consciousness."

Beach and ocean. That's about the only thing to do in Byron Bay. And the lighthouse. And people who love getting drunk and/or high every night. That's why I chose to stay only one day there. It's all I felt that I need. Also I want to mingle with the locals and this place is one hot tourist attraction. And while I like my beer every now and then, I didn't fly all the way to Australia just to do that... I could have stayed at home and gotten drunk.

I actually had a not bad day considering that though. I woke up late, despite wanting to go to the lighthouse for sunrise, after arriving wiped from the bus rides. So I went down to the beach for a few hours and then while wandering around town, debating if to go to the lighthouse for sunset or next day's sunrise, I was greeted by a bloke from one of the travel centres. We spoke about my travelling plans and we ended up booking what I had planned. I stayed there much more than I thought I would, so my dilemma was decided for me.

The next morning I awoke before the sun and walked the 40 minutes to the lighthouse. There were more people than I expected there and we all enjoyed Australia's first rays of light together.

Onwards and Northwards! Next stop: Surfers Paradise.

Dog Free -

"Life is full of banana skins. You slip, you carry on."

My day at Coffs Harbour started terribly with the realization that I left my hiking boots on the bus arriving at my sleep-addled mind 5 minutes after the bus had left the station. But from such a bad start my day could only go up, right?

I made my way to Coffs Beach but alas arrived just after the peak of sunrise. I spent a couple of hours sitting by the beach and watching Coffs Harbour's locals coming down, most with their four-legged canine friends, to do some water sports or just hang out letting the dogs run. I found out later that it is a leash-free beach.

From the beach I made my way to the Big Banana, which had a few tourists, but apart from getting a picture of/with the statue there isn't much to do there unless you really like the taste of bananas, and then you might want to sit down at the restaurant. After an inquiry at the information centre I decided to walk back to the beach and then follow the creek to the Botanic Gardens.

When I got to the creek, a combination of the pleasure of seeing unleashed dogs being allowed to run free and the heat of the day made me decide to put down my bag, remove my sandals and dip my feet in the creek. As soon as I did I met a phenomenal dog named Barney who amazingly dives underwater to fetch rocks. Following Barney's antics I also spoke and bonded with his owners, Coffs Harbour locals Gordon and Kerrie.

After Barney fetched many rocks from varying depths, Gordon and Kerrie offered to give me a lift to a lookout overlooking all of Coffs Harbour. On the way to the lookout they also showed me their lovely and gigantic house. The view from the lookout was amazing, showing all of Coffs Harbour in its beauty. Following the lookout the lovely couple invited me for lunch at the local RSL club, which was delicious. Exchanging details and saying goodbyes I wandered around the town until the bus time arrived (the bus itself took a bit more time to show up).

Onwards and Northwards! Next stop: Byron Bay.

Power of the People - כוחם של אנשים

"How high will the sycamore grow?
If you cut it down, then you'll never know."

I visited an animal reserve today named Blackbutt Reserve in Newcastle. The most amazing thing about it? Not the variety of animals. Not the kindness of the staff. Not the fact that is surrounded by roads. Not the many walking trails which interweave with two other reserves in the vicinity. The most amazing thing is that it is free. Why is it free? Because the citizens of Newcastle wanted it to remain free and when faced with the choice between paid entry to the reserve and between paid parking they picked paid parking.

I vastly enjoyed the array of animals. From the earthbound wombats and wallabies through the tree climbing koalas and monitors up to the free-flying assortment of birds. Near the end of my circuit of the Reserve I had a good chat with keeper Doyle, exchanging stories about travelling and about animals. I even got to go with him behind-the-scenes and meet 'n' pet a koala. So so so silky and soft!

Afterwards I set off along the trails circling through the reserves by foresty ways surrounded by tall trees.

Later I wandered around Newcastle beach and the Shortland Esplanade, stopping at Fort Scratchley which was unfortunately closed. Continuing around the bend I went all through the esplanade before getting to the city centre and wandering around until my bus time.

Another aspect of Newcastle that struck me was the niceness of the locals. I have felt this in the rest of Australia, but today in Newcastle especially. Random people inquired nicely about my travels on the street and gave helpful advice just because I happened to be passing by them.

Before leaving Sydney the main reaction to my stop in Newcastle was "there's nothing to do there." Well now you know there is. Blackbutt Reserve is amazing, both in concept and in reality. Fort Scratchley looks cool from the outside (don't come on a Tuesday if you want to go in). The beaches look great and there are great waves for surfing. And the people are nice.

Onwards and Northwards! Next stop: Coffs Harbour.

City of Beaches -

"The sea does not reward those who are too anxious, too greedy, or too impatient. One should lie empty, open, choiceless as a beach - waiting for a gift from the sea."

Well my time in Sydney has come to an end and I'm on the move again. I enjoyed my time in this coastal city with the many beaches it has. Unlike Melbourne, it would be extremely difficult not to notice the waters of Sydney, especially as its most famous landmarks are in the harbour.

I stayed in Sydney with a lovely family. Tibby and Betsy and their children Daniel, Michael, Gabriel and Shoshana. They made me feel at home and looked after me as one of their own.

I started my sightseeing with the classics of Sydney: Opera House, Harbour Bridge, Royal Botanic Gardens, Mrs Macquarie's Point as well as the ANZAC Memorial in Hyde Park. The day after my mother's friend took us on an excursion to The Blue Mountains with a stop at the Norman Lindsay Gallery (talk about nostalgia!) on the way back. On New Year's Eve I walked to Rose Bay and then in the evening watched the fireworks from Dumeresq Reserve. The following week I visited Botany Bay (which got its own post) and took a ferry to Manly.

During my stay in Sydney there were also some less fun times, when my travel partner first stood me up when we were going to ferry to Manly and two days later told me he wants to go separate ways. On New Year's Eve! So I had to replan my trip without multi-day hikes and I will most likely delay the New Zealand part to a different trip.

As well as the sightseeing I got to see a lot of beaches, including Bondi, Coodgie, Cronulla, Manly and Shelly. I also got experiences of the ocean which I didn't have growing up in Jerusalem, which is not famous for its coast. I had my first time surf swimming in the ocean, which was quite tolling and more different from pool swimming than I expected. On my last day in Sydney, Michael gave me a basic lesson in surfing. I managed to catch waves lying down, but haven't succeeded yet to make the transition to standing (popping up in surfer's lingo). The feeling when you catch a wave, especially your first one, is so amazing and exhilarating it is hard to describe in words. It really is an experience you have to go through to know how it feels. I'm definitely going to look for more surfing opportunities on the way up the coast.

Now I'm continuing up the coast. Onwards! Northwards! Next stop: Newcastle.

Genesis -

"Everything that has happened... has its roots in this area."

Today I visited the point at which Australia began - Captain James Cook's Landing Point in Botany Bay.

A quick history lesson - Captain Cook landed his ship the "Endeavour" at Botany Bay on 28 April 1770. Cook and his men were met by opposition from the natives. Musket shots and lances were exchanged and when one of the natives' elders ran to his hut to grab a shield for protection, Cook and his crew landed on the rock. After some more exchange of fire the natives fled. The crew found a small stream as a freshwater supply and dug a well to further it. The richness and natural abundance kept the party at the bay for eight days and the plenty impressed Cook enough to name the place Sting Ray Harbour, and later Botany Bay. The scientific collection, gathered by Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander, was unprecedented in both size and nature. Departing Botany Bay, they continued northwards along the coast until Possession Island in Far North Queensland, claiming all of the coast as British territory, before returning to England via Indonesia and South Africa. Despite the decision to move the convict settlement to Sydney Cove, "Botany Bay" remained a metonym for transportation to any Australian penal settlement for some time.

The area around the bay on the Kurnell Peninsula is very well done, with information signs and memorials to crew members (including Sir Joseph Banks, Forby Sutherland and Daniel Solander) set on beautiful lawns surrounded by the quiet waters of the bay.

I also had the personal connection to the place, as my dad wrote a historical novel named "Sail Away from Botany Bay," telling the story of a group of prisoners trying to escape the cruel conditions of an Australian convict colony.

New Year - שנה חדשה

"Tomorrow is the first blank page of a 365 page book. Write a good one."

Well, New Year's Eve was a bit of a roller coaster of a day... My original plans were to meet up in the morning with my travelling partner, wander around the Centre of Sydney and then stake out a good spot to watch the fireworks and bring in the New Year.

Anyways, he decided he wants to do his own thing without me and left me a bit in the lurch. I took a walk down to Rose Bay and on the way I made friends with the neighbour's 1.5 year-old dog, exchanged words with an elderly Hebrew speaking golfer, found a yellow-crested cockatoo's feather and passed an Italian family playing backgammon. The bay itself is also very beautiful and relaxing.

When I returned from my walk Betsy (who is my mother's friend's sister and is graciously hosting me in Sydney) was surprised to see me around. I told her what happened and she arranged for me to meet up with Ari, the son of another of mum's friends, and his friends from university to go with them to see the fireworks.

I thought it might be a bit awkward at the beginning, since I hadn't met them before, but they were a really lovely bunch of people. We took loads of food down to our lookout spot at Dumaresq Reserve and it was much less crowded than the City Centre spots, consisting mostly of locals and not packed with tourists. The first display of fireworks was the family version for kiddies at 9 o'clock and they were quite great. To pass the time till midnight we played games of Charades and at 5 to midnight we put on "The Final Countdown." The midnight fireworks were spectacular and well coordinated ushering in the new year.

Happy New Year everyone! Let's make the most of it. 365 blank pages... better get writing.
