"The heritage of the past is the seed that brings forth the harvest of the future."
I have spent the last week in Maryland with cousins and at a friend's, but mostly toured around Washington D.C. The place is full of memorials and museums, and they are nearly all free.
On Monday I went with my cousins and we started out by the Lincoln Memorial. After seeing the statue and speeches of the famous man we walked along the Reflecting Pool towards the Washington Monument via the World War II Memorial. After that I had wanted to go see the White House, but due to incoming storm clouds we decided to visit a museum, going to the American History Museum. It was an interesting walk around there learning about the civil wars, the evolution of transport, and the life of the presidents and their families.
The next day I went to a friend in Gaithersburg who I haven't seen since 2003 when his family were in Israel for a year. We took the Metro into Washington and got as close as we could to the White House, which is not very as the security situation in the US is insane since 9/11. We continued on walking to the Jefferson Memorial, which is organised in a similar manner to the Lincoln Memorial. Following that we went to the Air and Space Museum, which detailed the history of space exploration and also included interactive activities which interest children too.
On the second day with my friend we planned to go to a baseball game (I have been told time and again by Americans that it is not a match), praying that it wouldn't get rained out. As it was an evening game we allowed ourselves a late start and visited the National Archives. There we saw the original copies of the Bill of Rights, the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, as well as other historical documents, such as the story of Rosa Parks and the detailing of the tragedy of the Titanic. After that we went to the Natural History Museum, touring through the evolution of animals from dinosaurs to modern man, including mammals, ocean life, insects and bones.
After grabbing a bite to eat we went to the ballpark, where I was treated to another of America's insane security protocols, when I wasn't allowed to bring my small bottle of water in with me. So saying goodbye to the bottle which accompanied me for a week, we entered Nationals Park and got pictures with the presidential mascots. The game itself was a new experience, though personally I found baseball quite static and not too exciting as a sport, and it is indeed named the National Pastime.
The day after the ball game we went for a hike in the Great Falls National Park. We started out at the overlook viewing the Great Falls and then hiked along the canal. On the way we saw many people walking, jogging or biking as well as a few animals, including a deer, a turtle and a miniature frog.
The next day, back with my cousins we went to Theodore Roosevelt Island before going to my cousins in Pikesville for shabbat.

התארחתי בשבוע האחרון במרילנד אצל בני דודים וחבר, אבל בעיקר תיירתי בוושינגטון. המקום מלא באתרי זיכרון ומוזיאונים, וכמעט כולם ללא עלות.
ביום שני נסעתי עם בני דודים שלי והתחלנו באנדרטת לינקולן. אחרי שראינו את הפסל והנאומים של האיש המפורסם הלכנו לאורך הבריכה אל עבר אנדרטת וושינגטון דרך אתר הזיכרון למלחמת העולם השנייה. אחרי זה רציתי ללכת לבית הלבן, אבל בגלל ענני הסערה החלטנו לבקר במוזיאןן והגענו למוזיאון להיסטוריה אמריקאית. היה סיור מעניין ולמדתי על מלחמת האזרחים, התפתחות התחבורה, וחיי הנשיאים ומשפחותיהם.
ביום למחרת הלכתי לבקר חבר בגייטרסברג שלא ראיתי מאז 2003 כשהוא ומשפחתו היו בארץ לשנה. לקחנו את רכבת המטרו לוושינגטון והגענו הכי קרוב שאפשר לבית הלבן, שזה לא מאוד כפי שמצב הביטחון בארה"ב פסיכי מאז אסון התאומים. המשכנו ללכת אל אנדרטת ג'פרסון, המאורגן באופן דומה לאנדרטת לינקולן. אחרי זה ביקרנו במוזיאון האוויר והחלל, שכלל את ההיסטוריה של גילוי החלל וגם פעילויות אינטראקטיביות המתאימות לילדים.
ביום השני עם חבר שלי תיכננו ללכת למשחק בייסבול, מתפללים שהמשחק לא יתבטל בגלל גשם. כפי שזה היה משחק ערב הרשינו לעצמנו התחלה מאוחרת ליום וביקרנו בארכיון הלאומי. שם ראינו את הגרסאות המקוריות של מגילת הזכויות, החוקה והכרזת העצמאות, בנוסף למסמכים היסטוריים אחרים, כמו סיפורה של רוזה פארקס ותיעוד אסון הטיטאניק. אחרי זה הלכנו למוזיאון להיסטוריית הטבע, ותיירנו לאורך אבולוציית בעלי החיים, מהדינוזאורים עד האדם המודרני, כולל יונקים, חיי האוקיינוס, חרקים ועצמות.
אחרי שאכלנו הלכנו לאצטדיון, שם קיבלתי הדגמה נוסף של מצב הביטחון הפסיכי של ארה"ב כשלא נתנו לי להכניס את בקבוק המים הקטן שלי לאצטדיון. אז בלי הבקבוק שלי נכנסנו לפארק הנשינולס והצטלמנו עם הקמע. המשחק עצמו הייתה חוויה חדשה, אבל באופן אישי הרגשתי שבייסבול זה משחק קצת מת ולא כזה מרגש כספורט, ולא לשווא קוראים לזה הבילוי הלאומי.
ביום אחרי המשחק הלכנו לטייל בפארק גרייט פולס. התחלנו בתצפית אל עבר המפלים ואז טיילנו לאורך התעלה. בדרך ראינו אנשים רבים הולכים, רצים או רוכבים על אופניים וגם כמה חיות, כמו צבי, צב, וצפרדע קטן.
ביום אחרי, חזרה עם בני דודים שלי, נסענו לאי של טדי רוזבלט לפני שנסעתי לבני דודים בפייקסביל לשבת.
