New Year - שנה חדשה

"Tomorrow is the first blank page of a 365 page book. Write a good one."

Well, New Year's Eve was a bit of a roller coaster of a day... My original plans were to meet up in the morning with my travelling partner, wander around the Centre of Sydney and then stake out a good spot to watch the fireworks and bring in the New Year.

Anyways, he decided he wants to do his own thing without me and left me a bit in the lurch. I took a walk down to Rose Bay and on the way I made friends with the neighbour's 1.5 year-old dog, exchanged words with an elderly Hebrew speaking golfer, found a yellow-crested cockatoo's feather and passed an Italian family playing backgammon. The bay itself is also very beautiful and relaxing.

When I returned from my walk Betsy (who is my mother's friend's sister and is graciously hosting me in Sydney) was surprised to see me around. I told her what happened and she arranged for me to meet up with Ari, the son of another of mum's friends, and his friends from university to go with them to see the fireworks.

I thought it might be a bit awkward at the beginning, since I hadn't met them before, but they were a really lovely bunch of people. We took loads of food down to our lookout spot at Dumaresq Reserve and it was much less crowded than the City Centre spots, consisting mostly of locals and not packed with tourists. The first display of fireworks was the family version for kiddies at 9 o'clock and they were quite great. To pass the time till midnight we played games of Charades and at 5 to midnight we put on "The Final Countdown." The midnight fireworks were spectacular and well coordinated ushering in the new year.

Happy New Year everyone! Let's make the most of it. 365 blank pages... better get writing.

Capital City -

"I have planned a city not like any other city in the world. I have planned it not in a way that I expected any governmental authorities in the world would accept. I have planned an ideal city, a city that meets my ideal of the city of the future."

We arrived in Canberra in the wee hours of the morning after a red-eye bus ride from Melbourne. The Greyhound service was excellent with the coach having free wifi, a USB charging point, good A/C, toilets, and comfy chairs with plenty of leg room. The driver was also the complete opposite of our usual stereotype of the Israeli driver, being a delightful bloke, helping the passengers load bags, board and generally looking out for them the whole way.

Between tiredness and adrenaline, we found the youth hostel, on the way making the acquaintance of a young Swiss named Toby who is in Australia on a pre-army trip. The receptionist wasn't the most attentive in the world and we found out we'd have to pay to stow our bags until the scheduled 1pm check-in, and that if we would be caught sleeping in the lobby or lounge we would be charged an extra night.

The three of us passed the time playing card games for a couple of hours. Then I decided that it's ridiculous to just burn our time lounging around. So after prodding the receptionist for some information, we set off on a short 5km walk to Black Mountain. Our way up the mountain was made pleasurable by the scenery and sounds and sights of wildlife awakening, including rabbits, rosellas, gallahs, cockatoos, magpies and a kangaroo. At the top we stood at the base of the towering almost-200m Telstra Tower which can be seen from most points in Canberra (reminded me of the String Bridge at home) and had a view of the city and its lake.

Upon our return to the hostel, a much friendlier receptionist met us and she helped us out by arranging to check us in early and giving us useful information, including maps and bus timetables. We then took a short walk to the supermarket to stock up on food for the weekend, and after brekkie took our bags from the locker and entered our rooms. Roey decided that he has to nap while Toby and I agreed to go to the Royal Australian Mint.

An hour and a bit later I got on a bus in Australia for the first time (I think ever) and was horrified by the price (A$4.5 for a ticket which can be used for 90mins). It got worse though. Wait for it. Thanks to GPS and smartphone technology we got off at the right bus stop (3 after the one we thought based on the timetable) and easily found our way to the Mint. The Mint was pretty interesting, detailing the history and process of minting coins, though it was unfortunate that they weren't working at the time of our visit (maybe due to Boxing Day). Sometime during our Mint touring, I discovered how the bus ride got worse - I had managed to lose my ticket. Fortunately, the driver of the bus back to the hostel believed me and didn't charge me again. Who said that Christmas spirit is dead?

Shabbat was very different and hard for me. It was the first time in my life that I didn't spend shabbat in a Jewish community. Even during my least enjoyable shabbats in Israel, including in the army with secular people, there was always a basic understanding of Judaism and Shabbat. This was reflected especially in the small things, such as the rooms only having electronic swipe-card keys which I couldn't use on shabbat.

I managed to find the local Jewish Centre (a 45 minute walk from the hostel) for Friday night and shabbat morning services. It is a quaint and lovely community and I enjoyed joining them for prayers. In the afternoon I napped for a while and in the evening wandered with Roey around town. I realized that I only had a candle for havdalah, so when shabbat ended we went to the only supermarket still open and bought the most natural grape juice we could find, grabbed a lemon from the free food shelf in the communal kitchen and brought in the new week.

Now we're on the Greyhound heading towards Sydney.

Shavua tov!

Road Trip -

"Sometimes the most scenic roads in life are the detours you didn't mean to take"

We hired a bomb car for a dirt-cheap price and took a road trip from Melbourne down to the Great Ocean Road. Instead of going the regular way along the coast and driving the Great Ocean Road from east to west, we took the most direct route, which was inland through Colac, to the Twelve Apostles. It was a good call as that way was beautiful and we ended up not going twice along the Great Ocean Road.

After being amazed by the beauty of the Twelve Apostles and posing for photos there (including with my Collingwood scarf, and a request by a tourist to be photographed with me and my scarf) we continued eastwards to our sleeping destination of Apollo Bay, stopping at a beautiful lookout named Castle Cove on the way.

Checked in at the hostel, we took the car up to Marriners Lookout which has a stunning view of the bay. Then we left the car by the hostel and took a walk around the beach and got ingredients for a delicious supper, which we cooked in the communal kitchen, helping ourselves to some hot chilli powder from the food trade shelf and leaving there our leftover tomato sauce and cheese.

The next day I woke up by myself at the crack of dawn (literally) and walked down to the beach to see the sunrise, accompanied by rabbits, magpies and galahs. I then went back to sleep for a couple of hours and then we continued driving along the Great Ocean Road until Lorne where we went up to Erskine Falls and walked our first hike of this trip. It was a short 3km hike through the jungle and the scenery was completely different from anything in Israel. We then returned to Melbourne to return the car just before Shabbat.

City on Water -

"As the river cuts his path
Though the river's proud and strong
He will choose the smoothest course
That's why rivers live so long
They're steady
As the steady beating drum"

There is a city built on water and it is excellent for bike riding. I'm not referring to Vienna or to Amsterdam. I'm referring to here, to Melbourne.

A few days ago I borrowed my mate's bike and went for a ride down to the beach. First of all, Melbourne, unlike my beloved Jerusalem, is very flat and not full of mountains and valleys. Secondly, Melbourne is a coastal city and through the city centre flows the Yarra River. It is a city built on the water. And despite this, I have never envisioned Melbourne as a coastal city strongly tied to water. Sydney, yes. Brisbane, yes. Melbourne, for some reason no. I even remember that as a child my great-uncle would take my dad and me boating on the river, but in my memory it seems that we had to travel at least an hour out of the city centre to reach the river.

The ride down to the beach was an amazing experience. There are very clear bike lanes on the road and despite the facts that I have not touched a bike in 7 years and that they drive here on the opposite side of the road, I had no problems. On the way to the beach there is a canal, full of birds and life. As soon as I neared the beach, I felt the sea breeze with all its wondrous scents, which as a Jerusalem boy, were not part of my everyday childhood experience. At the beach I climbed a hill to Point Ormond and I rested with the serenity of the ocean and an enjoyable breeze blowing.

Now that I have walked in the City Centre next to the Yarra River and now that I have biked from my mate's house to the beach, I hope Melbourne will be remembered properly in my mind as the city on water that it is.

Fallen Flowers -

"And how has it happened, and how does it happen still, that the wheat grows again."

Today I visited the Shrine of Remembrance, the largest memorial in Victoria for fallen Australian and New Zealand soldiers. And truth be told, as I was wandering the hall, apart from the language, I didn't feel a difference from memorials in Israel. The same medals for valour and courage. The same uniforms. The same 3D models explaining wars. The same flowers on the ground. The same men who died young.

Beauty of the City -

"Peace: It doesn't mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble or hard work. It means to be in the midst of those things and still be calm in your heart."

Friday morning I went into the centre of Melbourne. My aunt was very kind and gave me a lift to Richmond, where she works, and then helped me get on the train into the city centre. There I got off at Flinders Street station which is famous for the multitude of clocks at the entrance.

and I saw the famous (in our family at least) Young & Jackson pub.

Then I strolled down to the Yarra River,

where I saw the black swan in its natural habitat

and a bunch of seagulls who were fighting ferociously for chips.

Also the plant life around the Yarra was beautiful!

In Federation Square the poor Australians were deluding themselves and the public that Christmas is a winter holiday. It's not, there is no need for fake snow, winter decorations and Christmas lights.

I then continued with my original plan of taking the City Circle Tram which circumnavigates Inner Melbourne, but two stops in I had had enough of the crowd and noise so I got off, not completely knowing where. As luck would have it I found myself near Treasury Gardens where I saw some wonderful and dozy ducks

and a gorgeous flower near a fountain of peace.

Near that was also a JFK memorial.

I also encountered a real live magpie, but he didn't stay still enough for a picture and I had to change batteries in my camera too. From Treasury Gardens I continued east to Fitzroy Gardens where I did manage to get a picture of a magpie-lark.

Inside Fitzroy Gardens there is a Conservatory filled with beautiful flowers and this great statue:

Near the Conservatory there is Cook's Cottage, and hearing the words "it's free" being said I ventured inside.

It is quite a lovely, quaint, little place and all the furniture inside was authentic 18th century items. Also the garden was set out as it would be in the 18th century with herbs and aromatic plants. The guide who told me the whole history of the place was also dressed in 18th century clothes.

From the Fitzroy Gardens I continued southwards to the MCG, homeground of the best footy club in the world (Collingwood of course)!

I then walked along the Yarra back to the tram station and I saw the avenue that Melbourne deserves, not the one it needs right now.

Then I saw a crested pigeon next to the Yarra.

Then I went back to my uncle's house in time for shabbat.

Shavua Tov All!

Connections -

"We are all connected to each other. In a circle, in a hoop that never ends"

G'day from sunny down under!

I landed here two days ago and pretty much have hit the ground running, meeting up with family members and mates as well as exploring the beautiful city of Melbourne. Cliches and stigmas have a certain amount of truth in them, and it's certainly true the saying that Australians are nice and warm people. It's just amazing, anywhere you go, people will greet you with a "g'day mate" and make sure you know that there's "no worries".

Another cliche which I remember being told but don't remember experiencing that much (but that might be because last time I was here was 10 years ago) is the saying "Melbourne can have four seasons in a day." It was so true the first day I got here. Five minutes after leaving the airport it started lightly raining, later on when I walked over to my mate's house it went from spitting to pouring and finally it became a warm summer's day on the way to the beach before cooling off on the way home.

On the flight over I had a connection stop in Hong Kong of 6 hours between the flight legs of 10.5 and 9 hours. One of the funniest things on the flight over was that flying with me was a friend of my cousin who had been in Israel on a 10 month program and by chance I met him in the summer with one of the groups I worked with. It just made me think how small the world is and how a connection which may seem small and not necessarily significant when we make it at one point in life can come around in a different way later on (and save you from boredom in an airport).

Going off to explore the centre of town today with the City Circle Tram, so that should be fun.

Shabbat Shalom!

Ready? -

“Every end has a new beginning, and the departure is always hard”

So wow! It’s actually happening, every moment the flight is getting closer and I do not yet fully comprehend it. My bags are packed with the equipment. Some of it I’ve had for years, some of it I got recently for my work in hiking security, and some of it is brand new for this trip. Some of it I bought, some of it I was loaned, and some of it I was gifted.

The past few weeks have been a time of departure. A time of an end and a beginning. A time of happiness and expectations mixed with a bittersweet sadness. Every meeting with friends lately ends with the thought that we might not meet for a long time. Everything becomes “the last time that…” I had this phenomenon in the army as well, I would joyfully declare “my last guard shift,” “the last time I go to the base on Sunday,” “the last time I eat in the mess hall.” But now it is bittersweet, dipped in a little sadness. “My last hike in Israel,” “the last time I go to a hummus place,” “the last meal made for me by my mother.” It seems that when we are about to lose something is the time we most appreciate it. It’s a time that comes before change and it mixes excitement and fear. Usually I have a hard time with changes, even small things such as arranging my room or desk differently than the way I do, and this time seems no different. However, sometimes one must force oneself to go through changes, since change can be amazing and people who stay in the same place don’t develop in any direction.

So yeah, my flight is booked, my bags are packed and I’m ready to go. That is, as ready as I ever will be.

New Beginnings -

"A story is like a moving train: no matter where you hop onboard, you are bound to reach your destination sooner or later."

I'm writing these lines while travelling from Jerusalem to Haifa to return my gun and first aid bag to the company. This is it. I'm finishing my job as a security guard for hikes after 8 enjoyable months. I'm at another end. Which means that in a moment there is another beginning. This day of returning my equipment is right in the middle of my preparations for the flight. Yesterday I downloaded maps of Australia and New Zealand to my phone and uploaded music to it (as my mp3 decided to die after 6 years of use). And tomorrow I need to get a YHA card and finish taking care of my National Insurance for the period which I won't be in Israel.

When you think about it, 8 months is a lot. And it passed rapidly, which implies the amount of fun. In 8 months with the company I went on many hikes and saw breathtaking views. I met loads of people: guards, guides, teachers and students. Obviously it is impossible to like and be liked by everyone, but every time I managed to find a few excellent people. I especially remember the Camp Koby Experience group, who I worked with for 35 fun days in the summer (Benny says that's a company record for days. How great, I've always wanted to be a record holder) and we toured most of Israel. There are people who I met only in the past month and it slightly feels as if the universe is playing with me by letting me meet them such a short time before leaving for a long period, but I am sure that I will stay in touch with the people who are important to me and I will meet them upon my return. As well as the hikes there were also sporadic cases of guard duty, but unlike the army there was no prohibition to eat/sit/read/listen to music during a shift so it was less terrible. I got to visit amazing places in Israel which I hadn't been to beforehand, trial places which I wouldn't have gone to myself (and to some I see no reason to return) and also revisit places which I've already seen. My friendly advice: If you enjoy hiking and you're right after the army or just looking for a break from your daily routine (as a friend of mine in the company is doing) go for it - just pick up the phone to a hiking security company and work in it for half-a-year.

Now about the new beginning. In a few days I'm flying to Australia and New Zealand for my post-army trip (or you could call it the continuation as I have been hiking Israel for the past 8 months). There is uncertainty looking forward, and we want to flow with the trip and not have everything cast-iron in advance. At the same time I have a great safety net of my family in Melbourne and the support from Israel of my parents and thanks to these nets and support I feel safer to try new things and broaden my independence. I am also very excited to return to Australia after 10 years and see the family once more. I am sure there will be plenty of new and exciting experiences and I will try to share here when I have free time and internet. I appreciate comments, ideas and questions and in general staying in touch. I can't promise how much availability I'll have, but I will certainly try and answer, even if not immediately.

So g'day and I will be back in Israel in 6-7 months with a heavy Aussie accent (maybe).
