Rock On - סלע יסוד

Hi guys. I just returned from an amazing 3-day tour of the Red Centre.

After arriving at my hostel in Alice Springs at 21:00 after a 14-hour bus trip, Tuesday morning I was outside the hostel at 6 in the morning to get picked up for the tour by Nick, our Melbourne-born guide, driver and cook. Only two of us on the tour were picked up in Alice with the other 22 waiting at Ayers Rock airport. On the way there, we stopped at a camel farm and got a short, free camel ride and also saw kangaroos and an emu.

After picking up the whole of the group and having lunch, we went off to see the big rock, Uluru (Ayers Rock). First we stopped at a lookout, and we all took the classic postcard photos of it. Then we got up close to Uluru and walked around the base. Only when you're actually that close do you realise the sheer size of it, and the whole way we saw rivets, caves and also a waterhole along the base.

When we arrived at the campsite we jumped into the pool to cooldown. It was absolutely freezing and just dipping your feet in would be instantly refreshing. Following that we walked up to the lookout to see the sun set behind Kata Tjuta, noticing Uluru changing colour shades. Afterwards we sat down for dinner, most of the group having burritos, while Suzy (the other vegetarian) and I had falafel. As we also had hummus and crackers as a snack earlier on, I was reminded of home. Following the meal, Sam pulled out a pack of cards and after a few rounds we spread out our swags and sleeping bags and watched the Southern sky stars until we fell asleep.

The next morning we awoke early and returned to the lookout to watch the sun rise over Uluru as the moon set over Kata Tjuta. After some breakfast we set off to hike around Kata Tjuta (The Olgas) making the obligatory lookout stop first. The hike in Kata Tjuta was even more interesting than Uluru, as it wasn't just straight, flat terrain. After the hike we lunched on camel burgers (veggie burgers for us) and then went to visit the Cultural Centre at Uluru. There actually wasn't much at the Centre and the things which were there were told from the white man's point-of-view. I thought Nick's explanations of the black fellas (they prefer to be called this than Aboriginals or Indigenous people) and their culture were much better informed. We then headed to our second campsite at Kings Creek, there we dined on kangaroo steak and beef sausages (veggie schnitzel and soy sausages), finishing up with a dessert of marshmallows melted on the campfire and Tim Tams. Wonderfully fed we settled down in the swags and sleeping bags for another night sleeping under the Southern Cross.

On the third morning we had another early start, waking before the sun and after brekkie set off to Kings Canyon. There we did the rim walk, getting beautiful views of the gorge, before going down to the waterhole, where I had fun taking water pictures with reflections of the trees and red walls. After the hike we had a meal of leftovers from the previous days with extra bacon and eggs (we vegetarians also got fresh not burgers). After the meal the two of us who started at Alice said our goodbyes and were taken by Nick to an AAT coach for transfer back to Alice, the rest of the group staying another night in the bush before catching their flight the next day. After around 5 hours we arrived back in Alice and now I have the weekend to enjoy here before I head southwards.

אהלן חבר'ה. בדיוק חזרתי מסיור מדהים של 3 ימים במרכז האדום.

אחרי שהגעתי לאכסניה שלי באליס ספרינגס ב-21:00 אחרי 14 שעות באוטובוס, בשלישי בבוקר חיכיתי מחוץ לאכסניה ב-6 בבוקר ונאספתי ע"י ניק המדריך, נהג וטבח שלנו. רק שניים מאיתנו בסיור התחלנו באליס, כאשר 22 האחרים חיכו בנמל תעופה איירס רוק. בדרך לשם עצרנו בחוות גמלים וקיבלנו רכיבה קצרה על גמל וגם ראינו קנגרו ואמו.

אחרי שאספנו את כל הקבוצה ואכלנו צהריים, הלכנו לראות את הסלע הגדול, אולורו (איירס רוק). קודם עצרנו בתצפית, וכולנו צילמנו את התמונות הקלאסיות מהגלויות. אחרי זה התקרבנו אל אולורו והלכנו סביב לבסיס. רק כשאשכרה הייתי קרוב הבנתי את הגודל העצום של הסלע הזה, ולאורך הדרך סביב הבסיס ראינו הרבה סדקים, מערות וגם בור מים.

כשהגענו למחנה נכנסו לבריכה קפואה כדי להתקרר. אחרי זה עלינו לתצפית לראות את השמש שוקעת מאחורי קאטה ג'וטה, ואת אולורו מחליף גוונים. אז התיישבנו לארוחת ערב כשרוב הקבוצה אכלה בוריטוס, כשסוזי (הצמחונית השנייה) ואני אכלנו פלאפל. כפי שגם אכלנו חומוס וקרקרים לפני, נזכרתי הרבה בבית. אחרי הארוחה סם הוציאה חפיסת קלפים ואחרי כמה סיבובים פרסנו את המזרנים ושקי שחנה וצפינו בכוכבי השמיים הדרומיים עד שנרדמנו.

בבוקר למחרת התעוררנו מוקדם וחזרנו לתצפית לראות את השמש זורחת מעל אולורו בזמן שהירח שקע מעל קאטה ג'וטה. אחרי ארוחת בוקר הלכנו לטיול סביב לקאטה ג'וטה (אולגה) עם העצירה המחייבת בנקודת התצפית קודם. הטיול בקאטה ג'וטה היה יותר מעניין מאולורו, כפי שזה לא היה סתפ הליכה מישורית. אחרי הטיול אכלנו ארוחת צהריים של המבורגר גמלים (המבורגר צמחוני לנו) ואז ביקרנו במרכז התרבות באולורו. במרכז לא היו יותר מדי דברים ומה שהיה סופר מנקודת המבט של האדם הלבן. חשבתי שההסברים של ניק על האנשים השחורים (הם מעדיפים להיקרא כך מאשר אבוריג'נים או ילידים) ותרבותם היה הרבה יותר נכון. אז הלכנו למחנה השני שלנו בקינגס קריק (נקיק מלכים), שם אכלנו סטייק קנגרו ונקניקיות בקר (שניצל צמחוני ונקניקיות סויה), וסיימנו עם קינוח של מרשמלו מומס על האש וטים טם. שבעים ומאושרים הסתדרנו על המזרנים בשקי שינה לעוד לילה מתחת לצלב הדרומי.

בבוק השלישי התחלנו שוב מוקדם, כשהתעוררנו לפני השמש ואחרי ארוחת בוקר יצאנו אל קינגס קניון (קניון מלכים). שם עשינו את המסלול סביב לקצה, וראינו נופים מרהיבים, לפני שירדנו לבור המים, שם נהניתי לקחת תמונות עם השתקפויות של העצים והקירות האדומים. אחרי הטיול אכלנו שאריות מהימים הקודמים בתוספת בייקון וביצים (אנחנו הצמחונים קיבלנו גם לא-המבורגרים טריים). אחרי הארוחה שנינו שהתחלנן באליס נםרגנו משאר הקבוצה וניק הקפיץ אותנו אל אוטובוס אא"ט לנסיעה חזרה לאליס, כאשר הקבוצה נשארה עוד לילה בשטח לפני הטיסה שלהם ביום שאחרי. אחרי בערך 5 שעות חזרנו אל אליס ועכשיו יש לי את הסופ"ש להנות בו פה לפני שאני מתקדם דרומה.
