I visited an animal reserve today named Blackbutt Reserve in Newcastle. The most amazing thing about it? Not the variety of animals. Not the kindness of the staff. Not the fact that is surrounded by roads. Not the many walking trails which interweave with two other reserves in the vicinity. The most amazing thing is that it is free. Why is it free? Because the citizens of Newcastle wanted it to remain free and when faced with the choice between paid entry to the reserve and between paid parking they picked paid parking.

I vastly enjoyed the array of animals. From the earthbound wombats and wallabies through the tree climbing koalas and monitors up to the free-flying assortment of birds. Near the end of my circuit of the Reserve I had a good chat with keeper Doyle, exchanging stories about travelling and about animals. I even got to go with him behind-the-scenes and meet 'n' pet a koala. So so so silky and soft!

Afterwards I set off along the trails circling through the reserves by foresty ways surrounded by tall trees.

Later I wandered around Newcastle beach and the Shortland Esplanade, stopping at Fort Scratchley which was unfortunately closed. Continuing around the bend I went all through the esplanade before getting to the city centre and wandering around until my bus time.

Another aspect of Newcastle that struck me was the niceness of the locals. I have felt this in the rest of Australia, but today in Newcastle especially. Random people inquired nicely about my travels on the street and gave helpful advice just because I happened to be passing by them.

Before leaving Sydney the main reaction to my stop in Newcastle was "there's nothing to do there." Well now you know there is. Blackbutt Reserve is amazing, both in concept and in reality. Fort Scratchley looks cool from the outside (don't come on a Tuesday if you want to go in). The beaches look great and there are great waves for surfing. And the people are nice.

Onwards and Northwards! Next stop: Coffs Harbour.

ביקרתי בשמורת בעלי חיים בניוקאסל היום בשם בלאקבאט. הדבר הכי מדהים בה? לא מגוון החיות. לא נחמדות הצוות. לא העובדה שהיא מוקפת כבישים. לא השבילים הרבים שמובילים גם לשמורות הקרובות. הדבר הכי מדהים הוא שהכניסה בחינם. למה בחינם? כי תושבי ניוקאסל רצו שהכניסה תישאר חופשית וכשהיו צריכים לבחור בין כניסה בתשלום לבין חניה בתשלום הם בחרו בחניה בתשלום.

מאוד נהנתי משלל בעלי החיים. מהיצורים על הקרקע כמו הוומבאט והוולאבי דרך מטפסי העצים כמו הקואלה והכח ועד הציפורים המעופפות הרבות. לקראת סוף הסיבוב שלי בשמורה הייתה לי שיחה טובה עם עובד המקום דוייל, כשהחלפנו סיפורים על טיולים ועל בעלי חיים. אפילו זכיתי להיכנס מאחורי הקלעים ולפגוש וללטף קואלה. כל כך כל כך רך ונעים!

אחרי זה יצאתי לטיול לאורך השבילים וסובבתי את השמורות בדרכים מיוערות מוקף בעצים גבוהים.

לאחר מכן הסתובבתי בחוף ניוקאסל ובטיילת שורטלנד, ועצרתי במבצר סקרצ'לי שלמרבה הצער היה סגור. המשכתי בסיבוב לאורך החוף ולבסוף הגעתי למרכז העיר והסתובבתי שם עד זמן האוטובוס שלי.

עוד פן בניוקאסל שקסם לי היה נחמדות התושבים. הרגשתי את זה בשאר אוסטרליה, אבל היום בניוקאסל במיוחד. אנשים אקראיים ברחוב שאלו בחום על הטיול שלי ונתנו עצות רק כי במקרה עברתי לידם.

לפני שעזבתי את סידני התגובה העיקרית לעצירה שלי בניוקאסל הייתה "אין מה לעשות שם." עכשיו אתם יודעים שיש. שמורת בלאקבאט מדהימה, בקונספט ובביצוע. מבצר סקראצ'לי נראה מגניב מבחוץ (אל תלכו ביום שלישי אם אתם רוצים להיכנס). החופים נראים אדירים ויש אחלה גלים בשביל גלישה. והאנשים נחמדים.
